Q: What is the role of a Fire Board Director?
A: The Monarch Fire District is managed by a 3 member Board of Directors. Each director is responsible for the fiscal management of the fire district as well as setting policies, approving the annual budget, assisting with long range planning and negotiating labor and management agreements.
Each director serves a 6 year term. The directors are elected by you, our tax paying citizens, through the general election. Every 2 years (odd-year, April election) one director's term expires and you the taxpayers are asked to go to the polls to cast a vote which will determine who occupies the vacant seat.
The Monarch Fire Protection District Board directly oversees the Chief of the fire district, the Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, 3 Battalion Chiefs and all other fire department personnel. Normally the board allows the chief officers to handle day-to-day operations of the department while the board manages the operating finances.
Q: How does the fire board affect me?
A: Each citizen is directly impacted by the decisions made by the fire board. These decisions impact the fire and emergency medical services you and your family receive. This Tuesday you will have the opportunity to help decide which candidate will best manage your tax dollars and provide you with the highest degree of fire and emergency medical services. Let your voice be heard by casting your vote at the polls this Tuesday, April 7th (see our endorsement for Marlyn Flauter).
Q: How can I learn more about the operation of the fire district?
A: The board of directors encourages citizens to attend the open board meetings held once or twice per month. It welcomes citizen comments, reviews expenditures and discusses many operational issues.Citizens can also review information posted on both the fire district and firefighters' websites.
What area does Monarch Fire and EMS serve?
Monarch serves 55 square miles and protects over 55,000 citizens. Monarch Fire District is located in West St. Louis County. Our service areas include, but are not limited to; Chesterfield, parts of Ballwin, Wildwood, Clarkson Valley, Maryland Heights and unincorporated St. Louis County. The district is very diverse. It consists of rural, urban, industrial, and commercial areas. We also cover parts of the Missouri River, Highway 40, and all of Spirit of St. Louis Airport.
Why do I sometimes see Creve Ceour, Metro West, or other fire trucks and ambulances responding in Monarch’s district?
This is called "mutual aid". In some areas of the district, an ambulance or fire truck from a surrounding district may be closer than a Monarch apparatus, especially if a particular fire station is already out on a call. In these cases, Monarch has agreements with surrounding districts to have them come in to our district for calls, and in turn Monarch will assist them with calls as well. The main priority is to get the closest available help to the citizens.
How can I arrange for my school, or group to visit for a tour of the fire station?
Tours can be scheduled by calling the Fire Marshall’s office or the specific fire station you wish to tour. When calling, ask to speak with the house Captain. You may be redirected to call and speak with the Captain on duty the date you wish to visit. Please be aware, the fire stations and equipment are "in-service" at all times and may go on alarms prior to, or during the tour.
